When the Covid-19 lockdown highlighted the vulnerability of Nelson's homeless community, Male Room Inc had a plan for a dedicated day facility but no funding to complete it. Rotary Club of Nelson stepped in with a $20,000 contribution and took on project planning and management to bring Whare Haumaru to life.
 

Whare Haumaru now provides a safe day-time hub for people experiencing homelessness in Nelson, including a small number of women, offering support, shelter and connection Monday to Friday. It complements Male Room's broader counselling work, which supports hundreds of men and families across the wider Top of the South region each year.
