Rotary's presence in Nelson dates back to 1927, when the Rotary Club of Nelson was chartered as one of the region's first service organisations. Over the following decades, our members were early supporters of many of the initiatives that define Nelson today, from Founders Park and the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary to the Great Taste Trail and the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve — alongside more than 11,000 trees planted across the city and the hanging baskets that brighten the city centre each summer.

In 1966, a second club, the Rotary Club of Nelson West, was chartered to give more local people — many of them young professionals with growing families — a way to contribute to their community. Nelson West went on to build its own strong identity around hands-on community events, most notably the Boulder Bank Walk, alongside practical local support for the Nelson Food Bank, Coastguard, Nelson Hospice and Nelson Hospital, and international service through ShelterBox and Polio Plus.

Youth development, a shared priority

Both clubs have long placed a special emphasis on young people. Rotary Club of Nelson's involvement in founding the Nelson Tasman branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters in 1997 has, over more than 25 years, grown into the largest branch in New Zealand. Both clubs have also supported the Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Summer Science Forum participation, as well as Clued-up Kids for primary students and Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA for secondary students. Rotary Youth Exchange is something that our clubs have had a strong involvement in, with Nelson West leading the district committee for 10 years, hosting many students.

Responding to community need

As Nelson's needs have changed, so has our work. The establishment of Whare Haumaru — a day facility supporting people experiencing homelessness, delivered in partnership with Male Room Inc — is one recent example of Rotary identifying a gap and taking direct action to close it.

Recognising our community

Rotary Club of Nelson also recognises Nelson Tasman locals who make an outstanding contribution to the community, through the Sir Jack Newman Award — named for a foundation club member who served Rotary for 69 years — and through Paul Harris Fellow recognition, named for Rotary International's founder.

One club, one community

On 1 July 2026, the Rotary Club of Nelson and the Rotary Club of Nelson West amalgamated into a single club. Together, we carry forward everything both clubs have contributed towards — from the Boulder Bank Walk to Founders Park, from Big Brothers Big Sisters to Whare Haumaru — as one Rotary Club of Nelson, serving one community.
