Rotary has served Nelson for a century. The Rotary Club of Nelson was chartered in 1927, followed by the Rotary Club of Nelson West in 1966 — formed to give more local people, including many with young families and growing careers, a way to actively contribute to their community. On 1 July 2026, the two clubs amalgamated, bringing together their people, projects and nearly 100 combined years of service under one Rotary Club of Nelson.

Both clubs were built on the same simple idea: that ordinary people, from every walk of life and stage of career, can achieve extraordinary things for their community when they work together. That spirit continues today.

Part of something bigger

Rotary International began in Chicago in 1905, founded by attorney Paul P. Harris as a place where professionals from different backgrounds could exchange ideas and build lasting friendships. Rotary now has around 1.2 million members worldwide and is behind the international effort to eradicate polio, underway since 1979.
 

Locally, our members' shared experience spans local government, medicine, law, construction, education, farming, and dozens of other trades and professions — a breadth of knowledge our club puts directly to work for Nelson.
